Trekking
This trek will take you to two of the main archaeological sites in the area of Cusco: Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. The legends and lore of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu are already all over the world. Since its rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in July 1911, the citadel has been a subject of discussion and research, and finally in 1981 the Peruvian government established it as the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, which in 1983 was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Although much evidence of writings and stories about Machu Picchu can be found, little is known about Choquequirao, the lost city of the Incas.
Choquequirao, which means «Cradle of Gold», is a magnificent archaeological complex located in the Vilcabamba mountain range in the Cusco region. It is thought that this mountain range was the last refuge of the Incas resisting the conquest; led by Manco Inka II.
On our trek, we’ll enjoy the spectacular geography, native flora and fauna, inter-Andean valleys and cloud forest. The temperature on this trek can range from a minimum of 5ºC at night to a maximum of 25ºC during the day.
At 5:00am, we’ll leave in a private vehicle to the northwest of Cusco. On the way, we’ll pass the famous Pampa de Anta or Yawar Pampa (also known as the blood pampas, due to the fierce battle between the Incas and the Chankas for the possession of the city of Cusco). Next, we’ll descend to the warm village of Limatambo (2,600 m), where the archaeological site of Tarawasi is located. We’ll continue towards the Cunyac Bridge over the Apurimac River, the natural boundary between the Cusco and Apurimac regions, and will follow the road to the settlement of Curahuasi, famous for its aromatic liquor: Macerado de Anis. Then, we’ll make a short stop in San Pedro de Cachora village (2,800 m) in case you need to get some last minute things before arriving at our final stop of Capuliyoq (2,800 m), where we’ll meet our muleteers, and begin our hike to the viewpoint of Capuliyoq (2,800 m) to amaze ourselves with the spectacular view of the Apurimac canyon and Choquequirao.
We’ll descend for 4 hours along a zigzagging path, crossing scrubland and a forest of native trees called Phaty, to continue along a path and bridge called Playa Rosalina (1,550 m), which allows us to cross the Apurimac River. In the final stage of the day, we’ll make our way up a steep trail to our first night’s camp called Santa Rosa (2,100m).
After breakfast, we’ll start the trek in the middle of a mountain scenery, right in the middle of the Apurimac canyon; we’ll visit some families in Santa Rosa and taste the sugar cane that is grown in the region. Then, a steady climb will take us to the village of Marampata (2,850 m) where we’ll have lunch. From here, we’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the archaeological complex of Choquequirao (3,033 m), and part of the road we are heading for. Arriving at the site of Choquequirao, we will have a first visit to enjoy the sunset, and if lucky enough, to spot some condors flying around. Our campsite is located in Marampata.
At dawn, in the middle of a cloud forest scenery, our guide will guide us around the rest of the Choquequirao. Currently, only 30% of Choquequirao has been discovered and can be visited. The archaeological site still keeps many secrets. We’ll have enough time to learn more about the Inca culture by visiting the houses of the Andean priests, collcas (Inca storage building), terraces, the llama sculptures sector, palaces, liturgical water fountains, the native flora and fauna among others. After this visit to one of the most representative Inca citadels of the Inca culture, we will hike back to Marampata. Then, we’ll descend to the interior of the Apurimac Canyon, we’ll go past Playa Rosalina (1,550 m) and before sunset, we’ll set up our last night camp in Chiquisca (1,830 m).
This will be the last day of trekking and we’ll be able to appreciate the Apurimac canyon as we follow the trail back through the canyon to our starting point. We’ll arrive at the Capuliyoc viewpoint (2,800 m), if we are lucky we will see some condors and then have lunch with a magnificent view of the canyon and the Padreyoc peak. After lunch, we’ll take our private vehicle to Ollantaytambo from where we’ll take our train to Aguas Calientes (about 2 hours). You’ll spend the night at a hotel in town.
Early in the morning, we’ll take the bus up from Aguas Calientes (2,050 m) to Machu Picchu (2,400 m). Here, there will be a 2-hour guided tour, which will allow you to appreciate the high level of development reached by the Andean civilization.
Machu Picchu demonstrates the superior knowledge achieved in Inca astronomy and astrology. You can also appreciate the understanding of the rainy and dry seasons through the solstices which were indispensable for the development of agriculture; the source of life in the Andes. Later, we’ll return by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and then drive to Cusco.
Note: The group of Porters/Horsemen and horses are only present in the trekking part.
