Explore Choquequirao, the legendary last Inca fortress, and venture to the enigmatic city of Machu Picchu with our immersive 8-day tour.

After the Spanish conquest, Manco Inca and his successors took refuge and ruled the vast region of Vilcabamba. This area, rich in Inca heritage, includes several archaeological sites and establishments built to honor the last dynasty of the Incas: Manco Inca, Sayri Tupac, Titu Cusi Yupanqui, and Tupac Amaru. The last dynasty of the Incas was established in the Antisuyo region of the Inca Empire, located northwest of Cusco in the Vilcabamba mountain range of the Peruvian Amazon. This region features tropical cloud forests and a chain of snow-capped mountains with ever-changing climatic conditions.
The Vilcabamba region is flanked by two deep canyons: the Apurimac Canyon on the left and the Willcamayu Canyon on the right. The Inca dynasty in this area respected the customs and traditions of pre-Inca cultures, forming a neo-imperial state to preserve the knowledge of Inca religion and astronomy.

Explore the rich history and breathtaking landscapes of Vilcabamba, the last stronghold of the Incas, with our expertly guided tours. Join us on an unforgettable journey through Peru’s ancient wonders.

We’ll leave from Cusco at about 5.30 am and drive to Capuliyoc for about 4.30 h, passing through the village of Cachora (2,850m / 9,350ft). Capuliyoc is the meeting point with the team of cooks and muleteers, as well as the caravan of horses or mules, who will accompany us throughout the trek. After loading all our camping gear and personal belongings, we’ll start the trek through a flat trail to the Capuliyoc Pass (2,800m / 9,186ft). Here, we will observe the evolution of the landscape and vegetation from the depths of the Apurimac Canyon to the peaks and snow-capped mountains that dominate the Vilcabamba mountain range. We will descend into the Apurimac Canyon to the village of Chiquisca (1,930m / 6,332ft), Playa Rosalina (1,550m / 5,085ft) or Santa Rosa (2,100m / 6,890ft) where we will camp for the night.

  • Transportation time: 4h.
  • Walking time: 6h.
  • Distance: 14 Km
  • Difficulty level: moderate
    Meals: L = lunch, D = dinner.

After breakfast, we’ll start the hike amidst a mountain scenery, right in the middle of the Apurimac canyon. In Santa Rosa village, we’ll be visiting some local families and we’ll try the sugar cane, which is grown in the region. Then, a steady climb will take us towards the village of Marampata (2,850m / 9,350ft) where we’ll have lunch. From here, we’ll be able to appreciate a magnificent view of Choquequirao archaeological site (3,033m / 9,951ft), and part of the road to where we’ll be heading. Once we have arrived at the site, we’ll have a first visit to enjoy the sunset, and with a bit of luck, see Condors flying. Our campsite is located in Marampata/Choquequirao.

Currently, only 30% of Choquequirao has been discovered and can be visited, the archaeological site still keeps many secrets. We’ll take enough time to learn more about the Inca culture by visiting the houses of the Andean priests, collcas (Inca storage building), terraces, palaces, liturgical water fountains, local flora and fauna among others.
After this visit, we’ll walk to the Choquequirao pass (3,270m / 10,728ft). In addition, we’ll take a break at the archaeological site of Pinchaunuyoc (2,450m / 8,038ft) and finally descend into a mini canyon called Rio Blanco or Silvestre (1,900m / 6,234ft) where we’ll spend the night.

Due to the constantly changing ecosystem, this day is the most arduous and also the most spectacular. After a hard ascent to the community of Maizal (3,000m / 9,843ft), we’ll have a short stop to catch our breath and enjoy the magnificent scenery of mountains and snow-capped peaks. Although the remains of the Inca Trail are in good condition despite the constant weather changes during the rainy season, it’s important to walk carefully. At the San Juan pass (4,170m / 13,681ft), you’ll see splendid mountains and glaciers, originating from a chain of snow-capped peaks at over 5,000m / 16,404ft. The vegetation increases and you’ll have the opportunity to see the diversity of orchids, bromeliads and other plant species. During the afternoon, we’ll learn about the variety of coffee that the Lucmabamba region produces, as well as tasting real coffee and the most fruits of the region. A cosy setting that will allow us to discover more about the flora and fauna of the natural park of Mandor and Machu Picchu. You’ll spend the night at a hotel in Aguas Calientes.

From this site, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the Machu Picchu mountain and the deep Vilcanota Canyon. Then, a deep path through the vegetation will take you to the Hydroelectric station (1,950 m) from where you’ll walk along the railway towards the village of Aguas Calientes (2,050 m).

If you’d like to take this option, we suggest getting the train from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes to avoid walking at an additional cost.

  1. Recommendations
  • The hike previously described may vary due to weather conditions, landslides, participants walking pace or other factors. Our professional guide will make the right and best decisions along the way for the benefit and safety of the group.
  • The Andean weather is quite unpredictable. Thus, we suggest bringing warm clothes, a hat/cap, sunglasses, a scarf, gloves, jacket, high protection sun cream and 2 liters of mineral water per person.
  • During this trek we’ll reach 4,670 masl. This combined with the weather conditions can make the daily hiking even harder. As to enjoy the trek better, we recommend you to be healthy and in good physical condition and to acclimatize in Cusco for at least 3 days before the trek.
  • We recommend our visitors to spend the first night in the village of Santa Rosa to fully enjoy the archaeological site of Choquequirao. Depending on the possibilities (walking pace, weather, etc) the guide will provide more information about the camping site.
  • The hike to Choquequirao should not be underestimated. Especially the second day which involves a lot of physical effort to finish the day. Combined with the altitude and the extreme dry climate and heat of 29°C average (it can be very hot), the trek can be difficult. The trail is strewn with constant ascents and descents. We strongly recommend that you first acclimatize to the altitude and be in good shape.
  • Camping sites: The camping sites on the route may vary from those described in our itinerary, due to the limited number of campsites that are known to the general public. Our guide and representative will recommend to the group the best option given the circumstances.
  1.  Optional services to be hired
  • To make the most of Machu Picchu, we suggest taking the buffet lunch at the Tinkuy, Sanctuary Lodge restaurant, located right next to the archaeological site. We also recommend the buffet lunch option at El Mapi hotel Machu Picchu by Inkaterra in Aguas Calientes.
  • Extra Porter / Horseman: In accordance with the law (31614) of the Ministry of Labour, the collaboration of an extra porter will be granted at the request of the client. However, the customer’s luggage must not exceed 12 kilograms. The service of an extra porter / horseman has a cost of 140 USD, which includes transportation, entrance to the Inca Trail, food and camping equipment.

Note: The group of Porters/Horsemen and horses are only present in the trekking part.

  • We generally hike from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes. However, we suggest taking the train, which will take about 30 minutes to arrive in Aguas Calientes. Ask for this at an additional cost.
  • Optional train services: It is possible to travel in a superior luxury category on the Vistadome or Hiram Bingham trains; contact us for more information.
  • On Demand – Vistadome Train: The «Vistadome» train offers you breathtaking views during your journey to Cusco, offers fashion shows, dinners, a refined service and premium travel conditions. In addition, the carriage is built with large windows that offer unparalleled panoramic views and the possibility to take beautiful photographs. The Vistadome also has air-conditioning and heating, and ergonomic leather seats that are very comfortable after so many hours of walking. The Vistadome offers you a first class service, which will allow you to immerse yourself in the Andean culture, through the landscapes, the music, the dance and even the food carefully prepared with local ingredients.
  • On Demand – Hiram Bingham Train: The Hiram Bingham Train category is optional and it is a luxury service of the Orient Express, operated by the company «Peru Rail». You will experience an exceptional journey. The Hiram Bingham carriages are distinguished by their blue and gold colour, their warm and cosy interior and their elegant upholstery. The service includes 4 carriages, 2 restaurant carriages, as well as a panoramic view carriage with bar. Brunch and dinner on board are also included.

For the optional services, contact our staff to check availability.

During high season (May to September), it is difficult to ensure the exact date of entry, due to the restrictions set by the Ministry of Culture to limit the number of entries to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu; therefore, the date of entry to the Inca Trail could vary for one or two days; then we will adapt the program so you can make the most of it.
  2. From the first to the sixth day, we are accompanied by a group of muleteers and mules who will carry all the camping equipment and personal belongings of each participant (maximum 7 kg).
  3. Note: If you wish to visit any of the extra mountains, please inform us in due time before purchasing the entrance tickets to the Machu Picchu citadel.

  1. Student card: To qualify for the 20 USD student discount, you must have a valid ISIC student card when you book, ¡not just when you arrive in Cusco! It must be valid for the current year. When booking, we need a picture of the card sent to the contact email. The Ministry of Culture is strict when verifying student cards. If you do not have a valid ISIC student card, you will be charged the regular price.
  2. Tips: for porters, cooks and guides, tips are always welcome. Porters are also very grateful for a small donation, such as school clothes or supplies for their children.
  3. Cancellation policy: For any cancellation; the costs already incurred by the travel agency will be at your expense. For more details on the cost of cancellations by certain participants, please refer to articles 6, 6.4 and our cancellation policies in the sales terms and conditions.
