Cusco, the Amazon Rainforest route: an excellent combination of mountain biking and trekking, discovering the local culture and the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

This trip is an excellent combination of mountain biking and trekking for 4 days, which will take us from the Imperial City of Cusco to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, through small villages and Inca archaeological sites. We start the cycling tour descending from the high Andean mountains of 4,000 meters into the heart of the Amazon rainforest cloud forest. The following days we will have the opportunity to hike through mountains and valleys, small villages and discover their plantations of Coca, tropical fruits and of course the coffee of Santa Teresa valley. We explore the evidence and vestiges of the Inca culture at Llactapata Inca site. Finally we spend the night in Aguas Calientes town before visiting the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

We meet at your hotel at 6:30 am. We leave on board our private transport, for discovering Chinchero town (3,762 m), the ancient Inca fortress, with an intact architecture that dominates the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Continuing through the valley of Ollantaytambo (2,700 m), we go up to Malaga pass (4,350 m) from where we
Start riding on mountain bikes (except in case of bad weather, we will advance to the next starting point) and we will descend for 3h or 4h in the amazon rainforest. We have lunch on the road. Also we will have the chance to observe the flora, birds and visit the archaeological site of Waman Marca «the site of the falcon» (1,890 m). This afternoon we will arrange to stay with a local family of Santa Maria village (1,430 m) to learn how to use simple technology and indigenous techniques for the harvesting of Coffee and Coca leaves, depending on the season. If you wish you will have time for optional activities.

This morning you will be surprised with a nutritious breakfast prepared by a local family, consisting of a cup of natural coffee and fruit juice (depending on the season). En route, explore the Inca Trail following along the Vilcanota River and challenging whimsical ascents from where you will find magnificent views of the Santa Teresa Valley and a mini canyon of 800 meters deep. Lunch in the village of Qellomayo (1,810 m). Here, discover the flora and wildlife up close, in particular the hummingbird, parrots, eagles, orchids and etc. Also we will have the opportunity to harvest local fruits such as oranges, tangerines, pacay (Andean fruit), mangoes and coffee. Continuing along the river bank, we relax in the thermal baths of Cocalmayo, which is located next to Santa Teresa village (1,850 m).

Breakfast at your accommodation and local transport to Lucmabamba village. This morning you will have the chance to meet a rural community family where you can witness the cultivation and processing of the best coffee of Lucmabamba village (2,000 m). Then, an Inca trail will bring you discovering the vestiges of the Inca culture to Llactapata archaeological site (2,650 m). From here we reach the Machu Picchu mountain and the deepest part of Vilcanota Canyon. Then, a deep path through the vegetation will bring you to Hydroelectric (1,950 m). Later we follow the Urubamba river to Aguas Calientes town (2,050 m). Overnight and dinner in Aguas Calientes.

After breakfast at the hotel, we boarded the earliest bus to Machu Picchu citadel. Enjoy an unforgettable view with the sunrise on the site and the company of our professional guide will take you to visit the historical legacy of Inca archeology, exploring more about the daily life and culture of the Incas. After the guided tour, you will discover the magic of the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu where you´re able to take some pictures in memory of your own experience.

Then, we return to Aguas Calientes town to board the train to Ollantaytambo/Poroy, from where our transportation will be waiting to bring you back to your hotel in Cusco (3,400 m).

  2. Recommendations 

    • The trip previously described may vary due to weather conditions, landslides, participants walking pace or other factors. Our professional guide will make the right and best decisions along the way for the benefit and safety of the group.
    • We advise you to stay overnight in Urubamba or Ollantaytambo on the first day (not included) to avoid waking up too early before the hike. This way, we’ll pick you up at about 7 am instead. The agency can help you with the necessary bookings. It is still possible to leave from Cusco, but you’ll need to get up at about 5am.
    • To make the most of Machu Picchu, we suggest having the buffet lunch at the Tinkuy Sanctuary Lodge restaurant, located right next to the archaeological site. We also recommend the buffet lunch option at El Mapi hotel Machu Picchu by Inkaterra in Aguas Calientes.
    • Usually this afternoon from Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes town is done on foot, otherwise, for this optional train ticket service must be hired in advance with an extra payment. Please ask for this service, with an additional charge.
    • Rafting, Quad ATV and Zipline tours: these optional services can be hired with an extra payment; contact us for more information.

  • An ergonomic day backpack for hiking with waterproof cover (30 or 40 liters).
  • Clothing for cold and hot weather.
  • Waterproof jacket, light pants, rain poncho, hat or cap.
  • Hiking shoes or waterproof running shoes.
  • Flip flops or sandals (for showers and hot springs in Aguas Calientes)
  • Wool or cotton socks.
  • T-shirts with short and long sleeves.
  • Towel easy dry and swimsuit (in case you want to relax in the hot mineral spring).
  • Sun block.
  • Anti-mosquito spray – minimum recommended 20% DEET (non-toxic – we suggest nature-friendly repellents). No malaria risk has been reported.
  • Anti-itch cream.

  1. During high season (May to September), it is difficult to ensure the exact date of entry, due to the restrictions set by the Ministry of Culture to limit the number of entries to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu; therefore, the date of entry to the Inca Trail could vary for one or two days; then we will adapt the program so you can make the most of it.
  1. Entrance tickets to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain: To hike up Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, it is required to book well in advance, because the entrance tickets are limited to a certain number of people daily. Therefore, we’ll take care of the reservation and confirm your entrance with an additional charge of $30 USD per person.

Note: If you wish to visit any of the extra mountains, please inform us in due time before purchasing the entrance tickets to the Machu Picchu citadel.

  1. Student card: To qualify for the 20 USD student discount, you must have a valid ISIC student card when you book, not just when you arrive in Cusco! It must be valid for the current year. When booking, we need a picture of the card sent to the contact email. The Ministry of Culture is strict when verifying student cards. If you do not have a valid ISIC student card, you will be charged the regular price.

Updated Machu Picchu Circuits for Better Visitor Management

The Ministry of Culture of Peru has revised the circuits in the Inca city of Machu Picchu to enhance visitor capacity management. Effective from June 1st to October 15th, and on December 30th and 31st, 2024, three new circuits comprising 10 different routes will be in place to explore Machu Picchu. These new routes aim to streamline visits and offer a better experience while preserving the integrity of this ancient site.

Visitor Capacity and Booking Details

Machu Picchu Citadel:

  • Daily Capacity: Ministerial Resolution N° 000528-2023-MC allows up to 4,500 visitors per day, with a potential increase to 5,600 during high season(May to September). To secure your spot, especially during peak season, book at least 3 months in advance.
  • Low Season (October to April): Although there may be more availability, it’s always wise to book ahead to ensure your preferred date and time.

Tourist Circuits:

Machu Picchu offers several circuits to manage the visitor flow and enhance your experience:

  • Circuit 1 (Panoramic)
    This circuit offers the iconic postcard photo from the Guardian’s House viewpoint, with panoramic views of the main Inca structures. It is divided into 4 optional routes:
    • Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain – Visit the Lower and Upper Platforms for views of the Vilcanota River, Waynapicchu Mountain, and the urban zone, then continue towards Machu Picchu Mountain.
    • Route 1-B: Upper Terrace – Explore the Lower and Upper Platforms with views of the Vilcanota River, Waynapicchu Mountain, and the urban area.
    • Route 1-C: Intipunku Gate (available only in high season) – Start at the Lower and Upper Platforms for scenic views, then proceed to the Intipunku Gate.
    • Route 1-D: Inca Bridge (available only in high season) – Begin with the Lower and Upper Platforms, followed by a path to the Inca Bridge, offering picturesque views of the Cusco rainforest.
  • Circuit 2 (Classic Machu Picchu)
    Explore the classic route through the entire Machu Picchu citadel, perfect for capturing the iconic photo of the city. This circuit is divided into 2 sub-routes:
    • Route 2-A: Designed Route – Includes the Temple of the Sun viewpoint, Plaza of the Temples, Sacred Rock, and the water mirrors complex.
